A dog being abused at Kepong KTM Station

Remember my post on "A True Story of a Street Dog Named Jonah" & "A tribute to Jonah the street dog" more than a year ago? Well, I thought such cruelty won't happen right here in Malaysia. How wrong was I...

Read on ...the news I was about to share was something which happened only last month at Kepong KTM station. I came to know about this news from my friend, Cheryl (from her Facebook status).
Source : malaysiankini
M Nisha, Mar 17, 10, 4:43pm
I am writing because of a grievous incident that took place on Monday, March 15 at about 3pm at Kepong Central KTM Station. My friends and I (six of us) were there to take the train to the Bank Negara station.
After parking our cars, we heard a dog howling, more like a painful cry. Then, we noticed a dog being tied to the grill (steel fence) of the KTM station. As we approached the dog, we stood aghast at the sight.
The stray dog's leg and neck was tied very tightly to the grill and a piece of wood had been shoved down inside its throat! The dog was bleeding and its feces were all around it. The string was attached to a pole in the KTM station.
Immediately, we confronted the KTM workers. They said that it was done by Kuala Lumpur City Hall workers because a minister was to be visiting the station next week. They failed to explain further.
At once, we called the SPCA and the Paws animal welfare society. The SPCA responded efficiently by informing us that an animal control officer would be there soon. We made a slight commotion in front of the KTM station but the KTM workers were not concerned at all.
After about an hour, as we were returning to the KTM Kepong Central Station, we received a call from the SPCA officer stating that the dog was now not tied up and was moving around. When we arrived, the dog was limping. The same KTM workers avoided us as we tried to confront them. A passer-by told us that the dog has been that way for quite some time.
The SPCA officer could not capture the dog as it walked away for quite a distance. He advised us to write to the media and to the SPCA as well.
Doenn't our country's animal rights support the idea that an animal has the right to live its life without being harmed and hurt by humans? We realize that people define the meaning of animal rights and abuse in different ways but aren't the citizens of our country merciful?
This dog could have been just put to sleep if it had been harming the public or causing a nuisance. Why stick a wooden stick down its throat.
There you have it then. Animal cruelty at it's worst. I mean, what can I say more. If everything in this world was created by God, why were we, one of His creation, abused another of His creation then.

As of now, I am not sure about the poor dog's fate. Is it okay? Is it recovering already? Any kind soul out there taking the dog to the vet? I have no idea myself.

To Kepong people or anyone taking the komuter train from Kepong KTM station frequently, do update us should you know anything about the dog's fate.

Anyway, a kind soul by the name "Christopher McFadden" created a petition through care2 petitionsite. Please do sign the petition. <link to petition> Our target is 10,000. To achieve that, we must spread it to all our friends. We can tweet about it. We can post the link on Facebook. Anything will do so long as we are able to create a buzz out of it.

Dog dragged by a motorcyclist ...

I posted news / issues on animals being tortured occasionally last year and I think I should bring the mentality forward. The public needs to be aware of what is happening around us and the world over.

Yes, I know I couldn't do much to save everything and anything. But, if this is as much as I can do, I will do it of course. The article below is taken from The Daily Chili of The Star Online. I'll just summarize it properly for better reading.
According to the article, a photo depicting a motorcyclist towing a chained dog while riding on a motorcycle on a highway in Fuzhou was uploaded to the internet by a netizen named Liu on Thursday. The photo sparked off public outrage in China.
It seems that Liu managed to grabbed a photo of the motorcyclist. Liu asked the man to stop but the man just sped off. The dog was said to be unable to bark due to the chain chained around its neck. Its four legs were bleeding too.
Public who came to know about the photo and Liu's shout out demanded a search for that man to be made.
There you go. Dog being dragged along the road? What? What is going through inside the man's head anyway? Is it so fun to torture a living being? Is he excited by the screams and suffering look of the dog? I am puzzled. What had gone wrong in his upbringing by the way?

I am tired of all the animal torturing news coming from China. When my animal activist friends on facebook posted something on animals and how bad the animals in China were tortured, I felt really really bad and ashamed. They called all Chinese evil, terrible, torturing, hopeless and everything.

I know they only meant China Chinese. But hey, at the end of the day, we are still Chinese (though I am a Malaysian Chinese). I am proud of my Chinese heritage and I despise it when 'Chinese' is branded in that sort of way. At the very least, now, I can tell people that there are Chines who cared and understand that torturing another living being is a no-no.

Seal Hunt 2009 ... An Update

I had been a little slow at updating my blog this week :) I was actually hoping that the entry - 'Seal Hunt 2009' will sank in a little further and deeper among all my readers and visitors. Is it working? :)

As of this entry, I've got some little updates on the 'Seal Hunt 2009'.

    The Bad News
    1. Apparently, the hunting of seals are happening right NOW!!! In Canada, provincial and federal officials authorized and endorsed the slaughter of around 2,200 grey seal pups earlier this month. Location: Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
    2. This year, the slaughtering in Canada will be allowed until the 14th of March. About 20 to 30 sealers are expected to participate in this slaughtering. Seal pups will be herded into groups and clubbed to death. The age of the seal pups are around 8 weeks old. Tools used: Bat and Hakarpik - wooden bats with hammer head and metal hoot at the end.

    The Good News
    1. However, it is good to hear that the hunt faced some tough challenges from the weather in some areas (mother nature is helping the seals too?). With a combination of bad weather and processing plant difficulties, the hunt which are to be commenced on Hay Island slowed to a halt. FYI, Hay Island is a Protected Wildnerness Area (What are them sealers doing there anyway?).
    2. The Russian government has banned the hunting of baby seals in the regions surrounding the White Sea. "Seal hunting is a bloody industry. It is clear that it should have been banned a long time ago" said Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Way to go, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. I hope Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper will take a leaf out of you!

    Seal Hunt 2009

As promised in "More 'click for a good cause' buttons right here....", here is a post on seal hunt.

    What is seal hunt?
Seal hunt is defined as commercial hunting of seals for their meat, pelts (fur), skin and blubber (fat). Sometimes, seals are hunt to ensure the population does not reach undesired levels. Seal hunt is practiced widely by countries like Canada, Greenland, Norway, Namibia and Russia.

During Canada's annual seal hunt, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are killed in the most unimaginable and horrific ways. No doubt, seals stand no chance against club-wielding trappers. And, they must look on as fellow pups are bludgeoned to death before meeting the same bloody fate. They will have their skulls smashed in … or shot point-blank by hunters.

Now imagine this – the mother seal watches her baby being beaten to death. Can you then feel what the mother seal feels inside? - Anguish, heart’s broken, unparalleled pain, horrific, etc, she may even attempt to get to her baby … and possibly get killed herself.

Since 2003, over 1.7 million seals have been butchered. In 2008 alone, more than 205,000 individual seals were killed during the massacre. What puzzles me is that the government of Canada is willing to sacrifice everything (national reputation, wrath of taxpayers, economic hardship from boycotts) to continue their seal hunt which is nothing more than a money-making scheme orchestrated by professional fishers as well as make-work project for jobless fishermen.

Interestingly (and thank God), majority of the Canadians are opposed to the killing of seal pups. One of the best known is Rebecca Aldworth. She led a team of international photographers, journalists, and government officials on annual treks to the ice floes off the Canadian mainland to witness and document the barbaric cruelty of the seal hunt and to ask for their assistance in securing an end to the slaughter.

    Watch this !!!
(warning: contain graphic images of seal hunt)

So, what can we do for the seals?
    1. Stop buying/wearing clothes containing materials made of seal!
    2. Boycott Canadian seafood products!
    3. Sign various petitions and pledges!
    4. Urge the Canadian government (through Canadian embassy in your country is possible too) to to call off the seal hunt!
    5. Spread the word - among your family members, friends ... whoever that will listen!
    6. Stay away from Canada while the hunt continues!
    7. Stop thinking that you can't make a difference. You can ... so long as you try! Canadian ... not Canadian ... who cares!!!
Take note! Canada Seal Hunt 2009 will start in about a month time!

    Links to various petitions
Last but not least, a Facebook event (virtually of course) called 'Song of the Seal' will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m. So, do look out for it to find out what is it all about. For more information on seal hunt, you can visit:
    So, lets take action NOW!
Lets put AN END to ANIMAL CRUELTY!
And thus, those seals will have a NEW BEGINNING!

I'll end this post with cute images of seals. Enjoy :)

(Now, do you want anything to happen to those cute innocent seals ... HELL NO!)

Report this Facebook group!!! Help remove it from Facebook now!!!

To my readers and visitors (in fact everyone/anyone) who have a Facebook account, I need your help here. I really do!

I need you to report this group. Why?

Okay! I'll tell you why ...

There is this group in Facebook by the name of 'I Kill Animals'.

What comes to you mind when you see the word 'I Kill Animals'?

Yes! That's right ... it is a group for animal killer lovers ... (sick isn't it)

The group was created by this guy named Richard James Bogdan III (Buffalo, NY) a year ago.

He posted several photos which was pretty gory and sickening.

Below are the photos (I adjusted the size of the photos in the hope that I don't scare all of you away from my blog! :) posted.

He also had the nerve to post a video of him (my guess) launching a squirrel. Poor thing.

To report a group on facebook is easy. To do that:
    1. Click the "report group" link at the bottom left of the page.
    2. Choose "violence" in the flag in the drop-down menu.
    3. You DO NOT need to join the groups in order to do this.
    4. You can also specify saying something like “This group transmits content that I deem harmful, abusive and hateful, encouraging criminal acts and gratuitous violence” or “violence towards animals breeds violence towards ourselves” or whatever else you think adequate to the context.
Arguing with the members of this sick group is pointless and a complete waste of time. So, just report the group (and the members, if you want) and leave.

    Thank you
(from me as well as on behalf of my group 'Stop Anti-Cat', 'Help remove All groups promoting animal cruelty from Facebook!' and others)

    Note
Every reported clicks count. Up till now, at least more than a dozen such horrible group is removed. For example, I Love Hurting Animals [removed 13th Jan '09], Support LIVE Skinning in China [removed 13th Jan '09] and The Roadkill Appreciation Society [removed 16th Jan '09].

On freeing Brindi ... a dog who is seized for “euthanization” - Latest update

Hours have since passed. Rightly so, it has been more than a day since Brindi's case are heard on court.

Francesca holds up a photograph of her pet mix-breed dog, Brindi.
(Image taken from The Chronicle Herald)

Anxiously as I am, I have been checking the group 'Save Brindi' consistently for any news.

According to Francesca, there is no ruling yet and she doesn't know how long it will take. But she feels it went well.

During the court proceedings, Francesca is accompanied by 5-7 wonderful supporters.

Not only that, even the media is there early. More came at the end ... approximately 5 - 7 TV stations and probably some radio stations too.

Francesca Rogier speaks with a supporter outside the courtroom at the
Nova Scotia Supreme Court yesterday (Image taken from Metronews)

The appearance of the media clearly shows that Brindi's case is a special one.

The judge is reviewing all the new information he received and will certainly make his decision soon.

Francesca's lawyer Blair Mitchell was excellent ... from what I read thought the group.

So, there you have it. No decisions are made ... it may take days or even weeks. There is also a possibility that Francesca has to pay SPCA for all the time, money, and resources spent while looking after Brindi all this while. That should not be a problem as many kind supporters are willing to help out.

As of now, I think it is still not to late to sign a petition. It may very well work to our favour ... fighting to the very last minute (when ruling is made). Click here to access the petition.

I end my entry here with several links to several articles on Brindi and Francesca as reported by:Francesca and Brindi deserve a second chance !!! May Brindi be freed as soon as possible ...

Save Brindi from Euthanasia !!! She is innocent ...

First and foremost, this entry is written in the 11th hour. It is written, extracted and posted rapidly to raise awareness as well as to save a dog named Brindi.

    Brindi

Brindi will be sentenced to death or life by tomorrow ... any moment now actually. It is up to us ... where ever you are ...

Brindi is a dog wrongfully seized for “euthanization” by the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

What you will be reading from now onwards are an extract from United Activists against Animal Cruelty and Save Bindi.

    The story is as follow:

Brindi is a shepherd/lab mix. She never bit or even threatened a human. She was adopted in June 2007. Between September 2007 and April 2008, she had three minor incidents with dogs on her property line. Only one dog got medical treatment, for just one small puncture wound – no stitches needed. Her owner Francesca Rogier did everything she could to make it up to the other owners, including paying for the treatment.

    Francesca and Brindi

On July 24, 2008, without notice, two animal control officers entered Francesca Rogier's home. They said Brindi is dangerous and must be put down. They immediately took her away, and now she lives in a cage, while her owner fights for both their lives. Having her dog seized sent her into shock. Work had started on a badly needed foundation for her home, but she had to halt it to save her dog. As a result she now lives without heat or water. Her fight is even tougher, because
    • 1. there is no appeal process;
    • 2. no municipal official can override the kill order; and
    • 3. she wasn’t charged with anything, so she got no day in court.
She was forced to hire a lawyer. Now she’s spent over $12,000, but thanks to delays by the city, she has yet to see a judge. A new January 5 date is likely to be further postponed. Her hopes of having Brindi home for Christmas have been crushed.

    Free Brindi !!!

The NS SPCA, whose legal obligation is to protect all animals in Nova Scotia from cruelty, puts its financial interests above Brindi’s life. It gets over $300,000 a year to run the city pound. So Brindi is caged inside the SPCA’s own Metro Shelter. Worse, Metro expects Francesca to pay $25 a day for boarding, even if she loses. And if she loses, Metro will destroy her dog as part of its contract. Even more cruel, though no law forbids it, it upholds Halifax’s refusal to allow owner visits. Francesca hasn’t seen her dog since July 24.

This is cruel and unusual punishment by any standard! The case stands out in Halifax for its cruelty, largely because Animal Control By-law A300 fails to guard against arbitrary enforcement. Dozens of dogs commit worse offences, such as biting humans or killing chickens with less punishment. Since 2007 in all but one such case, the owners were fined. Some even managed to avoid the fine.

    Free Brindi !!!

Brindi is a sweet-natured dog, gentle with children and the majority of dogs. The AC officers never saw her acting aggressively. She came from a first nations reserve, an abusive environment triggering protective behavior. However, she refrained from causing serious harm, so she did not attack to kill. This means special training can very likely correct her behavior. She’s already passed a tough obedience course, and learns easily. As part of her public promise to prevent further incidents, Francesca has hired a trainer, offered to pay a fine, and more importantly, built a secure fenced enclosure.

Brindi should be free to go home - now!

To understand more about Brindi, you can visit Francesca's blog (click here).

While it is now too late for me to be posting links to several petitions on Brindi's case, it is thus hoped that everyone is aware of what is happening around the globe ... especially the poor helpless animals.

What wrong did they ever do to us? Are we gonna let it out of our hands once more? Are we gonna let another 'Jonah' to happen? No, no and a no. It must be ended ...

    Note

Any updates regarding Brindi will be posted as soon as I got the wind.

A grieving dog and a crushed dog ...

Literally, the photo below speaks for itself.

The dog is grieving for its friend who died after being poisoned by the authority of Eskisehir, Turkey.

A lot of street dog in Turkey go around in pairs. One day however, a death squad came and poisoned one of them.

Hearth breaking indeed. It goes to show how loyal and loving is a dog compared to a lot of human beings.

The coming photo is a latest case in a series of dogs being treated cruelly.

Look at its right leg ... poor thing !!!

The dog you saw above is named Badem.

(Gosh, Badem looks a lot like my dog - Max!!! ... only a little younger and darker)

Badem is crushed and is only found 4 - 5 days after the accident.

Her right front foot and back left leg is totally broken.

If you want to help Badem, please do give me a buzz. I'll direct you to the right person !!!

The Beginning of animal cruelty is a tough probability to be solved. So, when can we End all of this? I know ... its like asking the sky to rain gold eh ... practically possibly impossible !!!

A tribute to Jonah the street dog.

Today’s post is especially dedicated to Jonah, the street dog who passed away recently. In fact, this very day.

    Jonah

To summarize it all however, Jonah was a little dog that was hit by a car and left in the street in Van, Turkey. Locals fed and watered Jonah and called authorities for help. Help arrived 3 days later. A horror indeed as it came in the form of a trash compactor.

Jonah was about to be thrown into the garbage compactor

People manage to take some photos and videos of what was done (cruelly) to Jonah. Jonah was dragged mercilessly by a noose around its neck. What could Jonah do with two broken hind legs then? Jonah was thrown heartlessly into the trash compactor and being carted away.

Jonah was thrown into the garbage compactor

Jonah was saved and placed in the care of vets at the Van University Veterinary hospital with allegedly irreversible damage to the spinal cord injury at Thoracic1 and Lumbar 2 & 3, and a resultant paralysis.

Note: To know more about Jonah and what had had actually happen, please read ‘The story of a street dog named Jonah’.

As of now, I’ll detail out what had actually happen after that – a summary and a continuity of ‘The story of a Street Dog named Jonah’.

    10th November 2008
    Jonah was hit.

    13th November 2008
The municipality finally decided to do something and send in a death squad on Jonah. They sent two garbage collectors and a garbage truck to pick Jonah up.

    25th November 2008
Due to the ultra racist nationalistic attempts of the so called animal lover organizations, Van municipality decided not to give Jonah for adoption.

Jonah was NOT allowed to leave Turkey. Jonah was condemned to a life in a shelter for attracting too many attentions from the inside and abroad.

The letter which reverse all the hard work in getting Jonah out (click to enlarge)

    28th November 2008
Jonah was known to be operated earlier this week. On that very morning, Jonah wasn’t doing so well but it is still alive.

Sadly in Turkey, most medical professionals and citizens believed that euthanasia was in the best interest of the animal.

The people who are working on Jonah’s case was trying to convince the local authorities to give Jonah the chance to at least experience once, human’s compassion and gentle love. They were hoping for some assistance of the international press and most especially the Turkish Press.

Sadly, a lot of Turks believed that an animal born on their soil should die on their soil, regardless of chances for a better life abroad. (*Speechless* Shallow minded... )

I was told by one of them (a contact there who gave us all this information, thanks a lot!) that chances of Jonah getting out are very slim.

    Jonah and the veteriner

According to her, there was not a single person she can find to deal with in Van and she was so frustrated. A couple of days before, she spoke to them on the phone. They had requested assistance with procuring a wheelchair for Jonah. She called them and told them she found a donation.

They were so happy on the phone but later on, they simply vanished. The next morning, she called the vet in Van begging her to get back to her on the measurements for Jonah's wheelchair. She was told this - "Jonah has deteriorated, I can't speak to you right now" and hung up.

    1st December 2008 (Today)
I was told by someone that Jonah was no longer alive. (Shock !!!). I visited the Facebook group - World Voice for Turkish Animals – WVTA and found a message which went like this:

It is with a very heavy heart that I have to inform you that Jonah is DEAD. RIP Jonah. I am sorry but we have no information as to why or how Jonah died.

Jonah has taught us all a lesson, dogs have a way to bring the world together in a moment of need, if you will check all the countries that have expressed love you will see we are nothing but a big melting pot of animal lovers that want to help, not pity Jonah.

All of our countries have problems, all of our countries have good and bad people and all of our countries have animal abuse.

I truly agree with the statement above. Everyone is not made to be perfect.

Jonah’s dead body is at the pathology lab of the animal hospital in Van at the moment. They are trying to write a report on his cause of death. (I can imagine them trying to turn out a story to cover up everything. Hope not eh!)

Now, lets just say goodbye to Jonah, the street dog whom had gone through so much up and down in its life.

Jonah is certainly a special dog as it brought us all here together.

Please, no hateful comments as it will only make the situation worse. I am sure Jonah will rest in peace knowing that we think and care about it.

Jonah, may you Rest In Peace.

It may be the end of the road for you in this cold cruel world, but it is the beginning of a better life in another world. May all the love, care and affection fell upon you.

A True Story of a Street Dog Named Jonah

Latest : Jonah passed away on the 1st of December 2008. For more information, please visit 'A tribute to Jonah the street dog'.

    : ( May Jonah rest in peace ) :

This is a true account of a street dog named Jonah in Van, Turkey.

    Aww ... what a cute innocent dog : )

Anyway, straight to the point, one day, Jonah was hit by a car.

Calls to the authorities for help were unanswered. After lying in the street for 3 days with broken hind legs from that incident, the council sent out workers to collect and dispose Jonah.
    (What !!! Jonah ain't garbage !!!)

Jonah tried to get away from them, dragging his broken hind quarters.
(You tell me what can a little dog do when it is hurt and scared?)

Jonah was screaming and then tries to escape as the workers are approaching : (

These men were filmed putting a noose around its neck, one for each man and dragging injured Jonah to the truck. Jonah screamed in agony while people stood by and laughed.
    (What the ... !!!)

Jonah was tied and pulled roughly and without mercy !!! : (

Jonah’s cries went unanswered. Its small body was thrown into the back of the truck. Jonah was brought to the dump where it was later rescued.

With a shovel, Jonah was thrown into the garbage truck : (

The truck leaving the scene with Jonah inside

Amazingly enough, Jonah survived. Jonah was rushed to a veterinary clinic by concerned animal lover. His Turkish name was Karam.
(Karam, you are a hero !!!)

Do have a look at the video uploaded below ...

I had goose bump watching the video … how could they be such cold cruel human being.

    Look at Jonah's hind legs : (

Jonah's fate was uncertain as the facility was not equipped to deal with its extensive injuries.

Jonah’s plight fast receiving international concern thanks to the internet social networks like Facebok and Myspace.
(Well, I came to know about Jonah through my Facebook friends - Avril Simms & Bev Hill)

It was reported on the 17th of January that Jonah’s condition was very poor. Jonah could not urinate or defecate. Jonah lost control of both the function (poor thing).

Also, Jonah’s hind legs was not responding to any stimuli due to a possibility of a permanent neurological damage (poor poor thing).

    Jonah receiving its treatment

As of 19th November, Jonah managed to waive his tail
(I thought that area was paralysed … a miracle indeed)

According to the municipality of Van, Jonah had injuries in the ‘lumbal zone’ as well as in spines 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6.

A veteriner showing reporters Jonah's injuries

Unsurprisingly, it was believed that Jonah’s injuries were not caused by the car crash incident.

No doubt it was the way Jonah was handled with a shovel and tossed into the garbage truck.

Following the tragedy of Jonah, Turkey’s most-widely circulating newspaper Hurriyet decided to launch a national campaign against animal cruelty in Turkey.
    (Yay! That's the spirit)

Reporters taking photos for the national campaign

Sissy Macneil, a member of the World Voice for Turkish Animals (WVTA) started a petition for Jonah and Karam. Click here for the petition. Sissy was trying to adopt Jonah.

    Jonah's latest photo

Today the 25th of November 2008 however, I receive another news that Jonah will not be given for adoption eventhough the petition exceeded way above the goal of 1,000 signatures.

Jonah will be going to a shelter home : (

Why the hell they make such a decision when there are so many people around the world willing to give Jonah a true loving home.

There is only one reason and it is in the name of Turk's honour. Apparently, re-homing a dog abroad is an insult.
    (What the ... !!!)

Treating animals cruelly is a HUGE sin. They are hurting God's creation and that is an insult.

    Get well soon Jonah ...

Note: Today's post is dedicated to Jonah and all the heroes/heroin in the World Voice for Turkish Animals (WVTA).
